A tough weekened for Toledo Rockets basketball

On Friday night the Toledo Rockets men’s basketball team faced their rivals Bowling Green in front of a raucous home crowd. Despite the great environment the Rockets fell to BG 69-68 on a late layup by the Falcons’ Javonte Campbell with just over a second left. Campbell led all scorers with 23 points in the contest while the duo of Sam Lewis and Sonny Wilson kept the game close for Toledo scoring 21 and 13 points apiece. The Rockets drop to 9-5 in MAC play and 16-11 overall Bowling Green is now 5-9 in conference and 11-16 overall as the season winds down and teams are jockeying for conference tournament positions.

In a rivalry weekend for the Toledo basketball programs Saturday the Rocket women traveled down I-75 to face Bowling Green on the road. Bowling Green raced out to a 25-14 lead after one quarter and were able to thwart the multiple comeback attempts from the Rockets. Led by Amy Velasco’s 30 points and Erika Porter’s 16 points the Falcons were able to avenge a previous loss at the hands of Toledo. Nan Garcia had 18 points with 7 rebounds for Toledo and Kendall Carruthers added 16 but the Rockets couldn’t complete the comeback after cutting the deficit to three with two minutes remaining in the game. Bowling Green pushed forward stretching their lead, finally winning 81-72. Bowling Green improves to 8-6 in conference and 15-11 overall while Toledo is 10-4 in MAC play and 19-6 overall. Toledo has already qualified for the MAC tourney while Bowling Green is in solid contention.
